Quiet Threshold: Paddling the Backwaters of Bark Bay.
Spend a full day gliding through the marshy channels of Bark Bay Slough, a freshwater estuary where tamarack, carnivorous plants and wading birds edge peaceful backwaters that spill out to Lake Superior. The guided, 6-hour Bark Bay Full Day trip pairs a paddling tutorial with focused time on the water and a leisurely lunch at a lighthouse or sand beach, all delivered by local guides who know how to find calm even when the open lake is rough.

Outing Highlights
A calm refuge from Lake Superior
A thin spit of land separates Bark Bay’s sheltered slough from the open lake, providing reliable, tranquil water for paddling even when conditions on Lake Superior are rough.
A naturalist’s estuary
Bark Bay’s backwater channels are rich with biodiversity: tamarack stands, carnivorous plants and frequent wading birds make the slough a compelling destination for anyone interested in freshwater coastal ecology.
A gourmet riverside lunch
After paddling, guests enjoy an impressive spread — gourmet sandwiches, crostini and dip, fresh fruit, cookies and lemonade — served at a historic lighthouse or on a sand beach to rest and recharge.

Frequently asked questions
Planning Your Outing
Are wetsuits required?
When air and water temperatures fall below a permitted threshold, wetsuits are required; on hot summer days they may be optional and guides decide daily based on water-temperature data.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are not permitted in tandem kayaks for safety and permitting reasons; the operator can help arrange local doggy daycare if needed.
Can I rent kayaks and go unguided?
Generally no — renters must take and pass a 3-hour safety course to rent unguided due to the risks on Lake Superior; contact the operator or review their instruction/rentals page to arrange rentals or instruction.
Do you have single kayaks?
No — the operator uses only tandem kayaks for tours to maximize stability and comfort.
What if I'm traveling solo or our party is odd-numbered?
One guest will be paired in a tandem kayak with another guest or with a guide depending on group composition; trips also have a minimum of two participants to run.
