Pear Lake Winter Hut: A Limited-Season Snowbound Escape in Sequoia

Pear Lake Winter Hut in Sequoia National Park, California, is a rare winter shelter that turns a classic High Sierra approach into a compact alpine odyssey. Because crews could not mobilize all supplies after early winter storms and a federal shutdown, dedicated hutkeepers carried extra gear to enable a limited season. Note: trekking to or from the hut is prohibited on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays due to plowing schedules; some arrival dates therefore require multi-night minimums.

The journey is intended for experienced backcountry skiers and snowshoers. The ascent includes steep pitches, route-finding through wind-loaded slopes, and potential avalanche terrain; avalanche awareness, use of beacon, shovel, and probe, plus the ability to self-rescue, are required. Expect variable weather, intermittent whiteouts, and temperatures that drop quickly after sunset. Water must be treated or melted; propane and fuel are not provided.
