San Pedro Martir Island Biosphere Reserve is a critical conservation area located approximately 80 miles northeast off the coast of Baja California in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez). The reserve's terrestrial and marine ecosystems provide sanctuary for numerous seabird species, including the endangered black-vented shearwater and Heermann's gulls. Its location within the Gulf makes it an essential site for the protection and study of marine biodiversity. The rugged terrain of the island, with steep cliffs and rocky shorelines, offers dramatic vistas and is an important breeding ground for sea lions and other marine mammals.
