Located along the southeastern coast of Brazil, primarily spanning the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, the Área de Proteção Ambiental da Baleia Franca was established to safeguard the marine and coastal ecosystems vital to the southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) population.
