About Nā Pali-Kona Forest Reserve

Nā Pali-Kona Forest Reserve preserves a remote and ecologically rich section of Kauaʻi’s northwest slopes, offering exceptional opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and experiencing native Hawaiian forest ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1905, the Nā Pali-Kona Forest Reserve encompasses rugged terrain on the windward slopes of Kauaʻi’s Nā Pali coast region. It covers a large expanse of mountainous and forested land with steep ridges and deep valleys, connected to the world-famous Nā Pali Coast State Park. The area contains one of the largest tracts of native Hawaiian forest, featuring endemic tree species such as koa, ʻōhiʻa lehua, and rare native plants adapted to the diverse elevation and rainfall gradients. Its remote location and relatively limited access protect important habitats for native birds including the ʻakepa, ʻapapane, and endangered Hawaiian hawk (ʻio). Visitor access is mostly by foot, with trails that range from moderate to difficult and offer breathtaking views of rugged cliffs, waterfalls, and native ecosystems. The forest reserve serves as a gateway to the Nā Pali Coast, a top-rated destination for hiking and nature photography. Besides outdoor recreation, this area holds cultural significance for Native Hawaiians as it includes historic ahupuaʻa (land divisions) and traditional uses connected to ancient forest management. With no developed facilities inside the reserve, visitors must be self-sufficient, respecting conservation rules to protect fragile habitats and species. Nā Pali-Kona’s isolation, natural beauty, and ecological importance make it a treasured protected place for those seeking a wilderness experience on Kauaʻi.
