Lewis Ocean Bays Heritage Preserve, spanning approximately 10,751 acres, is situated just a short drive from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This lesser-known gem shelters a distinctive habitat known as a Carolina Bay, offering an ecosystem that is both rare and ecologically significant. The preserve primarily consists of wetland ecosystems, longleaf pine forests, and a variety of flora and fauna, including the endangered Venus flytrap and pitcher plants. Established to safeguard these biodiverse areas, the preserve provides countless opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploration. Visitors can discover an array of bird species like the red-cockaded woodpecker, as well as gopher frogs and black bears. Although the area features limited developed trails, its open landscapes are favored by those keen on hiking, photography, and experiencing nature in its raw, unspoiled form.
