About Aurlandsfjord UNESCO World Heritage Site

Aurlandsfjord is a spectacular fjord recognized as part of Norway’s West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering dramatic landscapes, steep cliffs, and tranquil waters ideal for exploration and outdoor activities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Aurlandsfjord is a dramatic branch of the larger Sognefjord, located in Vestland County, Norway. It is part of the West Norwegian Fjords, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its outstanding natural beauty and geological importance. The fjord extends approximately 29 kilometers inland from the Sognefjord, flanked by towering mountains reaching up to 1,500 meters above sea level. The glacial origins have shaped its steep rock faces and deep waters, providing some of the most striking fjord scenery in the world. Ecologically, the area supports a variety of coastal and mountain flora and fauna, including seabirds, freshwater fish, and hardy alpine plant species on the slopes above. Human settlements along the fjord, like the village of Aurlandsvangen, offer a glimpse into traditional Norwegian rural life with historic farms and quaint harbors. Key recreation opportunities include kayaking the calm fjord waters, hiking trails such as the Aurlandsdalen Valley trail that winds through varied terrain, and scenic boat cruises providing breathtaking views of waterfalls and cliffs. One of the notable landmarks is the Stegastein viewpoint, a cantilevered platform that extends 30 meters out over the fjord, offering panoramic views. Visitors are also drawn to the cultural heritage preserved in farmsteads and the unique architecture of stave churches nearby. The site attracts nature lovers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts who seek both adventure and peaceful immersion in one of the world’s most iconic fjord landscapes.
