About Francis Beidler Forest Heritage Preserve

Francis Beidler Forest Heritage Preserve is a pristine old-growth cypress-tupelo swamp in South Carolina known for its ancient trees and rich biodiversity, offering unique boardwalk trails ideal for wildlife observation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Francis Beidler Forest Heritage Preserve, located in Berkeley County, South Carolina, protects one of the largest intact old-growth cypress-tupelo swamps in the United States. Covering approximately 18,000 acres, this forest consists primarily of bald cypress and water tupelo trees that range from hundreds to over a thousand years old. The Preserve lies along the Four Holes Swamp and is part of the larger ACE Basin, a nationally recognized estuarine conservation area. The forest’s wetland ecosystem supports a diverse population of flora and fauna, including many wading birds, river otters, beavers, and occasionally, the rare red-cockaded woodpecker. Its boardwalk trail system allows visitors to experience the swamp environment with minimal disturbance, winding over 1.75 miles of elevated walkways through dense cypress knees and swamp waters. Historically, the Preserve was established in part through the conservation efforts of the Audubon Society, with significant funding from philanthropist Francis Beidler and the Hitchcock Foundation. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the area for birdwatching, wildlife photography, nature study, and quiet hiking. The preserve’s unique landscape includes striking features such as ancient bald cypress trees that often tower over 150 feet tall, and the sight of elegant purple pitcher plants in the understory wetlands. Its remote, watery setting offers a peaceful retreat and educational experience about wetland ecosystems and the importance of old-growth forest preservation. Francis Beidler Forest is also an important natural laboratory for scientific research on longleaf pine, wetland ecology, and climate change impacts.
