About Lake Neusiedl UNESCO World Heritage Site

Lake Neusiedl is Central Europe's largest endorheic lake, famed for its extensive reed beds, rich biodiversity, and vibrant cultural landscape, offering unique opportunities for birdwatching, windsurfing, and hiking.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lake Neusiedl, located on the border of Austria and Hungary, is Central Europe's largest steppe lake and one of the most important wetlands in the region. Covering roughly 320 square kilometers, the lake is a shallow, sand basin lake with no natural outflow, resulting in characteristic shallow waters that vary seasonally in size. The surrounding landscape is dominated by vast reed beds, extensive wetlands, and steppe grasslands, fostering a rich mosaic of habitats supporting a highly diverse flora and fauna. Its cultural landscape has been shaped by centuries of human interaction, with traditional viticulture, fishing, and wind-powered boating contributing to the area's unique identity. In 2001, this extraordinary wetland was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding universal value as a cultural landscape shaped by human use and natural processes. The site is a prime birdwatching destination, hosting over 250 bird species, including rare and migratory waterfowl. Visitors are drawn to the area for various recreational activities such as windsurfing and sailing on the lake’s flat waters, hiking and cycling through scenic trails along the lake's coastline, and exploring quaint villages showcasing local architecture and winemaking traditions. Notable landmarks include the National Park Neusiedler See-Seewinkel, several historic wine-growing villages, and traditional reed harvesting areas. The lake’s unique shallow waters support diverse fish populations, making it a popular spot for anglers. Its cross-border nature creates an exceptional opportunity for transnational conservation efforts and cultural exchange, enhancing its appeal to international visitors.
