Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Established in 1998, Silesian Beskids Landscape Park (Park Krajobrazowy Beskidu Śląskiego) covers an area within the Silesian Beskids mountain range, part of the Western Carpathians. Spanning roughly 386 square kilometers, the park encompasses a mosaic of forested hills, alpine meadows, streams, and traditional mountain villages. The terrain is characterized by gentle peaks with elevations ranging mostly between 600 and 1000 meters above sea level, including notable summits such as Skrzyczne (1257 m), which is the highest peak of the Silesian Beskids and a popular hike destination. Ecologically, the park is distinguished by mixed forests dominated by beech, fir, and spruce species, providing habitat for diverse wildlife including lynx, deer, and numerous bird species like the black stork and eagle owl. Historically, the region is culturally rich, featuring traditional wooden architecture, mountain shepherding heritage, and folklore. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to the park for its scenic hiking and biking trails that weave through lush forests and up panoramic vantage points. Winter sports are also popular given the area’s snowfall and ski facilities on Skrzyczne and other slopes. The park's visitor appeal lies in its blend of accessible nature experiences, cultural sites, and the relaxed atmosphere of mountain villages such as Wisła and Ustroń. Sustainable tourism and conservation efforts are prominent to protect the park’s ecosystems and traditional landscapes while supporting local communities.
