About Ningaloo Reef Marine Park

Ningaloo Reef Marine Park is a pristine coral reef ecosystem famous for its vibrant marine biodiversity and unparalleled opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and marine wildlife encounters.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Ningaloo Reef Marine Park stretches over 260 kilometers along the northwest coast of Western Australia and is one of the largest fringing coral reefs in the world. The reef lies just a few hundred meters offshore, making it accessible and highly popular among snorkelers and divers seeking to explore its diverse coral formations and abundant marine life. Ecologically significant, the park supports species such as whale sharks, manta rays, turtles, dugongs, humpback whales, and over 500 species of fish. It is also home to several endangered and vulnerable species. The park encompasses a mix of coral reefs, lagoons, lagoons, seagrass beds, and rocky headlands. Established in 1987 and expanded since, Ningaloo Reef was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for its outstanding natural values and marine biodiversity. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy whale shark tours, snorkeling at Turquoise Bay, diving spots like Osprey Reef, and visiting nearby Cape Range National Park for land-based exploration and hiking. The reef's relatively untouched environment offers a more intimate and less commercialized alternative to the Great Barrier Reef, drawing eco-tourists and researchers worldwide. The surrounding region features small towns like Exmouth, which serve as gateways for visitors. Management efforts focus on conservation, sustainable tourism, and cultural heritage protection, ensuring that the marine environments and Indigenous connections remain intact. Whether seeking underwater adventure or tranquil coastal landscapes, Ningaloo Reef Marine Park embodies one of Australia’s premier natural marine treasures.
