The Akumal Bay Marine Protected Area is situated along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula within the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. This area is renowned for its pristine waters and thriving coral reefs, home to a diverse array of marine species. The bay's warm waters attract sea turtles, which feed on the plentiful sea grass found here, offering visitors a unique opportunity to swim alongside these majestic creatures. Established in 2016, the protected status of Akumal Bay is instrumental in conserving its delicate ecosystems, which also include mangroves and tropical fish species.
