Located off the coast of Placencia, Belize, Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve is an underwater sanctuary spanning approximately 25,980 acres. The reserve is famous for its coral reefs, healthy mangroves, and seagrass beds. It serves as a vital spawning site for various marine species, drawing snorkelers and divers who are eager to see the congregating fish and majestic whale sharks. Established in 2000, the reserve is integral to the conservation of marine ecosystems in the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The Silk Cayes are small, picturesque islands within the reserve, offering clear waters and an array of marine life, from colorful coral formations to diverse fish species. Manta rays and sea turtles can often be seen gliding through the waters. The reserve is managed with a focus on sustainable tourism, preserving its natural allure while providing unique diving and snorkeling experiences.
