Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wahkeena Falls Trail is located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area of Oregon, within the Mount Hood National Forest. The trail begins at the Wahkeena Falls Day Use Area and follows a series of switchbacks alongside Wahkeena Creek, passing multiple cascades before reaching Wahkeena Falls, a 242-foot multi-tiered waterfall. The trail continues beyond the falls, connecting with sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and providing access to higher elevations and expansive views of the gorge. The environment is characterized by dense mixed conifer forests, moss-covered rocks, and a temperate rainforest atmosphere created by the moist climate of the gorge. Wildlife commonly spotted along the trail includes black-tailed deer, various songbirds, and occasional sightings of black bears or cougars. The trail's history ties closely to early efforts to make the Columbia River Gorge accessible to visitors in the early 20th century, with stonework and trail design reflecting craftsmanship from that era. Recreationally, Wahkeena Falls Trail is known for hiking, photography, and nature study, with many visitors combining it with adjacent trails to extend their adventure. The trail's moderate grade and switchback design make it suitable for family outings, while its connection to longer routes appeals to more experienced hikers. The trailhead includes parking and restroom facilities, making it a convenient entry point for exploring the gorge's natural beauty.
