Ouachita National Forest is a vast expanse of federally protected woodland situated in western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. Established in 1907, it is one of the oldest national forests in the southern United States and covers approximately 1.8 million acres. The forest encompasses the Ouachita Mountains, a unique east-west trending range featuring rounded ridges, pine and hardwood forests, and numerous streams and rivers. Ecologically, the forest supports mixed oak-pine forests, abundant wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, and numerous bird species. The forest is also home to rare plant communities and sensitive aquatic habitats. Visitors are drawn to Ouachita for its wide-ranging outdoor activities, including hiking on over 600 miles of trails, mountain biking on dedicated networks, fishing in clear streams and rivers, and paddling on the scenic Ouachita River. Notable landmarks include the Talimena Scenic Drive, a renowned 54-mile highway with overlooks showcasing forested ridges and valleys, and the Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area, which features rugged terrain and panoramic views. The forest also contains several wilderness areas such as the Flatside Wilderness and the Upper Kiamichi Wilderness, offering opportunities for backcountry hiking and solitude.
