Sawtooth National Forest covers over 2 million acres across central Idaho, with its southern sections accessible from the Malta area providing a gateway to vast forestlands, alpine meadows, and river corridors. This portion consists of rolling hills, scattered mountain ridges, and deep river valleys shaped by volcanic and glacial activity. The forest supports a range of ecosystems from sagebrush steppe at lower elevations to mixed conifer forests higher up, including Douglas fir, lodgepole pine, and western larch.
