About Białowieża Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Białowieża Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is one of Europe's last and largest remaining primeval forests, straddling the Poland-Belarus border and offering exceptional opportunities for wildlife viewing, hiking, and nature study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Białowieża Forest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve represents one of the last and largest remnants of the primeval lowland forest that once spread across the European Plain. Located along the border of Poland and Belarus, this ancient forest spans roughly 150,000 hectares, with more than half in Belarus and the remainder in Poland. The forest is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognized for its outstanding biodiversity and complex ecosystem, featuring a mosaic of mixed deciduous and coniferous trees, including majestic oaks, limes, hornbeams, and firs. It is famous for its primeval character, where natural processes dominate and minimal human intervention occurs, allowing a glimpse into Europe’s ecological past.

Białowieża Forest is home to the largest free-ranging population of European bison (wisent), Europe’s heaviest land mammal, alongside numerous other rare and endangered species including lynx, wolves, elk, and a variety of rare birds and insects. The forest's deep history includes centuries of royal hunting grounds and centuries-old forest management traditions, contributing to its current protection status.

Visitors to Białowieża Forest can explore well-marked hiking and biking trails, guided wildlife tours, and educational exhibits at visitor centers. Notable landmarks include the Białowieża National Park (Poland side) and the Belarusian Biosphere Reserve, plus ancient trees like the Great Oak and small rivers rich in biodiversity. The forest’s tranquil environment appeals to naturalists, photographers, and hikers seeking pristine, wild scenery. With its unique blend of cultural heritage and ecological value, Białowieża Forest offers an outdoor experience unlike any other in Europe.
