Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Bukit Jerai Forest Reserve spans approximately 2,300 hectares along the Jerai Hills in Kedah, Malaysia. The reserve features a tropical hill forest ecosystem with abundant flora and fauna thriving in its montane and dipterocarp forests. The hill rises about 1,215 meters above sea level, providing a refreshing cool climate distinct from the surrounding lowlands. Historically, Bukit Jerai was formerly known as Mount Jerai, an important landmark for sailors and traders navigating the Strait of Malacca since the 15th century. Today, it serves as a significant conservation and recreational area well-known for birdwatching, hiking, and picnicking. The summit hosts telecommunications towers and a resort, but numerous trails provide access to pristine nature and panoramic views of Kedah and even Penang islands on clear days. The forest reserve supports rare and endemic species, including various hornbills, orchids, and monkeys. Visitors are drawn to its refreshing environment, serene waterfalls such as Seri Perigi Waterfall, and the scenic Jerai Hill road, which is popular for leisurely drives and cycling due to its winding path through the forest. Bukit Jerai’s mix of ecological, historical, and recreational values make it a favored destination for outdoor enthusiasts exploring Northern Malaysia.
