Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Spanning over 666,542 acres, Chippewa National Forest is characterized by its large expanses of water bodies, diverse wildlife, and lush greenery. Established in 1908, it was the first national forest east of the Mississippi River. The forest is a significant habitat for bald eagles, supporting one of the highest breeding concentrations in the contiguous United States. The landscape is interspersed with more than 1,300 lakes, 923 miles of rivers and streams, making it a paradise for fishing and water sports enthusiasts. Recreation opportunities abound, including hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and winter sports.
