Cow Mountain Recreation Area spans approximately 41,000 acres within the Mendocino National Forest in northern California. It is characterized by rugged terrain composed of steep hills, oak woodlands, chaparral, and grasslands, providing diverse habitats for a wide range of wildlife including deer, wild turkey, and various raptors. The area was historically utilized for cattle grazing — the origin of its name — before being designated as a recreation area focused on multiple outdoor uses. Cow Mountain is especially renowned for its extensive network of off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails, with over 90 miles open for dirt bikes, ATVs, and 4x4 vehicles. Visitors can explore scenic overlooks such as Cow Mountain Summit, which stands at roughly 3,360 feet in elevation and offers expansive vistas. The area's ecology supports a variety of wildflowers in spring and serves as an important habitat for mule deer and black-tailed deer. Camping is available throughout with both developed and dispersed options, making it a favored destination for weekend and day visitors.
