About Forêt Montmorency

Forêt Montmorency is a vast research forest north of Quebec City, offering extensive trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, and nature observation amidst boreal forest ecosystems.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Forêt Montmorency is a 397-square-kilometer (approximately 98,100 acres) forested research area located about 70 kilometers north of Quebec City, Quebec. Managed by the Université Laval’s Faculty of Forestry, Geography, and Geomatics, it serves as one of the largest experimental forests in eastern Canada, supporting studies in sustainable forestry, wildlife management, and climate impact research. The terrain is marked by rolling hills, numerous lakes, wetlands, and a network of rivers, providing a diverse environment dominated by boreal tree species such as black spruce, balsam fir, jack pine, and paper birch. The forest is home to wildlife including moose, black bears, beavers, and many bird species. Forêt Montmorency also plays a crucial role in watershed protection for the region. Recreationally, it offers a well-maintained network of trails for hiking in summer and fall, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during winter months. Visitors can explore marked loops ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty, with interpretive signage highlighting the ecological and forestry research conducted on site. Several lakes within the forest provide opportunities for fishing and wildlife observation. As an actively managed forest dedicated to research and education, Forêt Montmorency draws outdoor enthusiasts interested in nature, forestry science, and sustainable resource use, offering a quieter, less commercialized experience compared to conventional parks.
