Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Haeger Lake Forest Preserve is a 216-acre natural area located in Cook County, Illinois, near the village of Palos Hills. The preserve is centered around Haeger Lake, a 33-acre manmade lake originally constructed in the 1920s. The preserve is part of the extensive Cook County Forest Preserve District, providing a green space for wildlife habitat and outdoor recreation close to urban areas. The landscape features a combination of open water, wetlands, prairie, and second-growth woodland, supporting species such as white-tailed deer, great blue herons, various waterfowl, and migratory songbirds. History of the preserve ties to the former Haeger clay mining operations, with the lake occupying a former clay quarry. Today, it serves as a destination for local anglers who fish for bass, bluegill, and catfish. Trails wind through the preserve offering opportunities for hiking, running, and birdwatching. Two main trails – the Lake Trail and the Wetland Trail – reveal panoramic views of the water and native ecosystems. Picnic areas with tables and grills serve families and groups, while a playground and seasonal interpretive programs enhance visitor appeal. Located less than 20 miles from downtown Chicago, it provides quick access to natural open space in an otherwise suburban setting, encouraging environmental education and outdoor relaxation. The preserve is managed to balance recreation with habitat preservation, maintaining water quality of the lake and supporting native plant restoration efforts.
