About H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest

H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest is a renowned ecological research area in the western Cascade Mountains of Oregon, offering rich forest landscapes and opportunities for hiking and nature study.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the western Cascades of Oregon, the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest encompasses a diverse terrain of old-growth and second-growth Douglas-fir forests, riparian zones, and high-elevation meadows. Established in 1948, it functions primarily as a long-term ecological research site operated by the U.S. Forest Service and Oregon State University. The forest spans a range of elevations from about 1,400 to over 4,900 feet and features the upper watersheds of several streams, notably Lookout Creek. The area plays a critical role in advancing scientific knowledge on forest ecology, watershed processes, and the effects of forest management practices. Visitors can enjoy numerous hiking trails that range from easy walks to moderate excursions, many of which showcase the forest’s abundant plant diversity, lush mosses, and mature conifer stands. The forest includes remote old-growth stands as well as patches undergoing natural recovery after past logging. Wildlife is abundant, including species such as northern spotted owls, pileated woodpeckers, and several amphibians. The research infrastructure includes experimental sites, hydrological observatories, and educational signage along some trails, making it a key destination for science enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike. The area's proximity to the town of Blue River and easy access via Forest Road 15 contribute to its appeal for day hikes and scientific field trips. Though camping within the forest is limited, the surrounding Willamette National Forest offers additional options. H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest stands out as a living laboratory preserving complex temperate rainforest ecosystems while inviting visitors to explore its natural beauty and ongoing scientific discovery.
