The preserve contains a variety of ecosystems including hardwood forests, wetlands, riverine habitats, and prairies, supporting diverse plant and animal communities. Historically, the land was part of native Potawatomi territories before becoming a public natural area under the management of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The preserve is notable for its mature oak and hickory trees, several marshy areas, and stretches of the river providing habitat for waterfowl, amphibians, and migratory birds. Visitors enjoy over 7 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing in the winter months. Anglers can access the Des Plaines River for fishing bass, catfish, and other species. The preserve has picnic areas, fishing spots, and scenic overlooks along the riverbank, making it a popular spot for both casual outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers. Its proximity to suburban areas like Northbrook and Glenview offers easy access, making Kennedy Woods a valuable natural refuge away from urban development. The preserve also supports conservation efforts through invasive species management and habitat restoration projects, contributing to regional biodiversity preservation. Visitors appreciate the quiet tranquility and varied landscapes that provide year-round recreation opportunities.
