About Kočevski Rog Forest Nature Reserve

Kočevski Rog is one of Slovenia's largest and most pristine forest reserves, renowned for its dense old-growth beech and fir forests and rich biodiversity, offering remarkable opportunities for wildlife observation and nature exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kočevski Rog Forest Nature Reserve is a vast and relatively untouched forested karst plateau in southeastern Slovenia, covering over 60,000 hectares. Characterized by rugged terrain, deep karst sinkholes, and dense stands of ancient beech, fir, and spruce trees, Kočevski Rog represents one of Central Europe's most significant forest ecosystems. The reserve harbors a wealth of biodiversity, including bears, wolves, lynx, brown trout, and a variety of rare bird species such as Ural owls and black woodpeckers. The forest has historically been sparsely populated, which helped preserve its wilderness qualities. It also holds cultural significance due to its history as a refuge and battleground during World War II. Today, Kočevski Rog attracts outdoor enthusiasts who come primarily for hiking, wildlife watching, and exploring its extensive network of marked trails. The area's karst features, including caves and sinkholes, add geological intrigue for visitors. Limited infrastructure aims to maintain the reserve’s natural state, providing a rare experience of deep forest solitude. Visitors are drawn to the serenity, spring wildflowers, and autumnal colors, as well as guided tours focusing on the forest’s ecology and history. The reserve is an essential anchor for conservation efforts in Slovenia and a critical corridor for large carnivores in the region.
