Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The McKenzie River Ranger District is a key administrative and recreational area within the Willamette National Forest in western Oregon. Encompassing a broad section of the Cascade Range, this district features a range of volcanic geology including lava flows, cinder cones, and remnants of ancient volcanic activity. The district is drained primarily by the McKenzie River, a popular destination for trout and salmon anglers, and a celebrated Wild and Scenic River known for its crystal-clear waters and rugged canyon scenery. Elevations in this district range from about 1,500 feet near the river valley to over 6,000 feet on surrounding ridges, supporting a diverse mix of Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, and a variety of understory plants.
