About Mississippi River Greenbelt

The Mississippi River Greenbelt is a vital protected natural corridor along the Mississippi River spanning Minnesota and Wisconsin, offering diverse recreational opportunities and rich ecological habitats that preserve the river’s scenic beauty and cultural heritage.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Mississippi River Greenbelt stretches along one of the most iconic rivers in the United States, covering areas on both sides of the Mississippi River in Minnesota and Wisconsin. This greenbelt serves as a conservation corridor that protects river floodplains, bluffs, wetlands, forests, and prairie remnants. With its diverse terrain, the area supports a rich variety of wildlife including bald eagles, osprey, river otters, and several fish species such as smallmouth bass and walleye. The greenbelt preserves cultural resources dating back to Native American settlement and early European American exploration and trade. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking along scenic bluffs and forest trails, paddling and fishing in the river, birdwatching in key habitats, and winter sports during colder months. Several trail networks connect river overlooks, historic sites, and natural attractions. Among the landmarks are Lock and Dam No. 1–chiefly used for river navigation and offering unique views of river traffic–and the Hastings Sand Coulee, a distinctive geological formation. The greenbelt functions not only as a recreational zone but also as an important ecological buffer that helps mitigate flooding and preserves water quality. Visitors appreciate its mosaic of forested areas and open waters, which provide year-round outdoor access close to metropolitan centers like Minneapolis-St. Paul, making it an accessible natural retreat. Stewardship efforts focus on invasive species control, habitat restoration, and maintaining public access, ensuring the greenbelt remains a vibrant place for nature connection and outdoor activities.
