Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Montour State Forest spans approximately 17,333 acres in Montour County, Pennsylvania, with an extension into Northumberland County. It features rolling hills, mature hardwood forests, and several streams that create a vibrant ecosystem supporting wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various songbirds. Acquired in the early 20th century as part of Pennsylvania’s effort to reforest and manage recovering lands, it today serves as a multipurpose outdoor area balancing recreation with conservation. The forest includes the prominent Roaring Creek and the headwaters of Chillisquaque Creek, providing habitat for aquatic species and fishing enthusiasts. Recreational visitors can explore over 50 miles of multi-use trails, which accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, including segments of the 27-mile Montour Trail system extending outside the forest boundary. Popular activities also include camping in both developed and primitive campgrounds, and winter sports such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Notable landmarks include the Pennsylvania State Game Lands within the forest, old logging roads now transformed into trail corridors, and scenic overlooks providing panoramic views of the Appalachian foothills. Montour State Forest appeals to outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quieter recreation experience away from busier state parks, offering plentiful opportunities to connect with nature year-round.
