Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Mount Grace State Forest spans approximately 1,442 acres across the towns of Warwick, Orange, and Northfield in north-central Massachusetts. The forest is dominated by Mount Grace, a 1,621-foot summit that provides scenic vistas of the Connecticut River Valley and the Berkshire Hills beyond. The landscape features mixed hardwood forests, ledges, wetlands, and several small ponds, promoting a rich variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, bobcats, and numerous bird species. Historically, the area was used for logging and agriculture before being reforested and protected as a state forest. The forest offers diverse recreational activities, with well-maintained trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The Mount Grace Fire Tower, located atop the summit, is a key landmark accessible via the 3.5-mile Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, providing panoramic views. The forest is also part of the larger Metacomet-Monadnock Trail system, which attracts long-distance hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors appreciate the forest's quiet, remote atmosphere along with opportunities for birdwatching, fishing in nearby ponds, and seasonal fall foliage viewing. Mount Grace State Forest is a popular destination for families and day hikers looking for moderate outdoor challenges with rewarding natural scenery.
