Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Nebraska National Forest is an intriguing blend of man-made and natural beauty, spanning over 141,000 acres. Originally created by the federal government to demonstrate forestation of the Plains, it is now a destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The forest is split into two districts: the Pine Ridge and the Bessey Ranger Districts. The Pine Ridge area boasts ponderosa pines and rugged landscapes that are ideal for hiking and mountain biking, while the Bessey District is home to one of the largest hand-planted forests in the world. Wildlife such as deer, wild turkeys, and sometimes even elk can be spotted across these landscapes. Notable landmarks include the scenic Grasslands, which provide habitats for an assorted range of species. History buffs will appreciate the remnants of early European settlements. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of recreational activities, from camping under starlit skies to exploring the varied landscapes that make up one of the nation's more unique national forests.
