Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve is located near Nanyuki town on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya. It covers an area of approximately 3,000 acres and consists mainly of indigenous forest with a mix of bamboo and riverine vegetation. The reserve is part of the larger Mount Kenya ecosystem and supports a variety of wildlife including primates, birds, and butterflies, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts. The forest is characterized by tall indigenous trees, dense undergrowth, and flowing streams that feed into waterfalls and natural pools. One prominent feature is the Ngare Ndare waterfalls, a popular attraction where visitors can swim in natural pools or take guided walks along the forest trails. The reserve also contains caves and swimming holes used for both recreation and research. Originally protected to conserve the natural water catchment, Ngare Ndare now plays a vital role in protecting local biodiversity and providing eco-tourism opportunities that support the surrounding communities. Activities such as hiking, bird watching, and cycling are favored, and the forest’s proximity to Nanyuki makes it conveniently accessible. Visitors often explore the various trails that reveal the forest’s rich flora and fauna, with local guides providing insights about conservation and the natural environment. The reserve’s cool climate and lush greenery create an inviting outdoor setting year-round. Visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and the chance to observe species not commonly seen in more frequented parks. Ngare Ndare offers a combination of natural beauty, manageable trails, and diverse wildlife that appeals to both casual visitors and outdoor adventurers.
