Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Royalston State Forest covers over 7,000 acres across the towns of Royalston, Athol, and Orange in Massachusetts. Characterized by rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, and the winding Millers River, the forest provides a variety of landscapes for visitors. The area is rich in ecological diversity, home to species such as bobcats, deer, and several songbirds, making it attractive for wildlife enthusiasts. Historically, the land was utilized for logging and farming before its designation to protect natural resources and provide outdoor recreation. Recreation within the forest includes hiking on a network of trails that traverse scenic woodlands and riverfront areas, fishing in the Millers River, and hunting during seasons allowed in designated portions. Winter offers opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Notable landmarks include Spirit Falls, a scenic waterfall, and the Millers River, part of which is protected under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers system. Visitors often appreciate the quiet, less crowded environment compared to larger state parks, providing a peaceful wilderness experience easily accessible from the surrounding communities.
