Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sand Dunes State Forest is located in Becker County, in west-central Minnesota. Covering approximately 10,000 acres, the forest features a distinctive landscape shaped by glacial sands and dunes that support a variety of ecosystems including jack pine barrens, aspen forests, and wetland areas. The forest is part of the greater prairie/savanna ecosystem transition zone, providing important habitat for species such as white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, and several songbirds. Established in the early 20th century, this state forest was originally managed for timber production and wildfire protection but has since developed a reputation for outdoor recreation and habitat preservation. Visitors can enjoy an extensive trail system, including designated off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails that attract riders from across the region. Hiking and horseback riding trails wind through sandy soils and pine forests, offering seasonal wildflowers and birdwatching opportunities. The forest contains several small lakes and wetlands that provide fishing and paddling experiences. Campgrounds and dispersed camping sites enable multi-day stays, making it an excellent spot for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The forest's sandy terrain and open landscape create a scenic and less crowded alternative to nearby state parks, drawing visitors who appreciate quieter natural areas with a blend of recreational options. Sand Dunes State Forest's combination of recreational diversity and ecological importance makes it a noteworthy destination within Minnesota’s protected lands.
