Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sence Valley Forest Park is located near the town of Coalville in North West Leicestershire, England. Spanning a varied landscape of woodlands, meadows, and the picturesque River Sence, the park covers approximately 400 acres and provides a refuge for local wildlife as well as a destination for outdoor recreation. The park's geography features gentle rolling hills with trails meandering through mixed deciduous woodland consisting primarily of oak, ash, and birch trees. The park is part of the larger National Forest project aimed at reforestation and enhancing biodiversity in a formerly heavily industrialized region. Established in the late 1990s, Sence Valley Forest Park capitalizes on the region's former coal mining heritage by repurposing the land into a vibrant community resource focused on nature conservation, leisure, and education. Visitors will find numerous walking and cycling paths, including surfaced routes suitable for families and accessible users. Key wildlife includes varied bird species such as woodpeckers and herons, alongside bat populations and occasional deer sightings. The park features fishing opportunities on the River Sence and adjacent ponds, and the network of trails offer seasonal wildflower displays and autumnal color change. A visitor centre provides educational exhibits and information on local ecology and history. The park appeals to those seeking easy access to nature close to an urban setting, making it a popular spot for casual walkers, dog walkers, birdwatchers, and cyclists. Its proximity to Coalville and nearby Leicester enables convenient day visits throughout the year.
