About Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra (UNESCO)

The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting vast areas of ancient tropical rainforest renowned for exceptional biodiversity, including endangered species such as orangutans and Sumatran tigers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra comprises three national parks—Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat, and Bukit Barisan Selatan—spanning over 2 million hectares on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This area features rugged mountains, dense lowland and montane rainforests, and an array of ecosystems ranging from tropical swamp forests to alpine meadows at higher elevations. The terrain supports some of the richest biodiversity in the world, providing habitat for critically endangered species such as the Sumatran orangutan, Sumatran tiger, Sumatran elephant, and Sumatran rhinoceros. The heritage site offers opportunities for eco-tourism including guided jungle treks, wildlife watching, birding, and visits to remote waterfalls or hot springs. Visitor experiences often focus on the challenge and thrill of seeing rare wildlife in a largely pristine environment, with trails through primary rainforest, river valleys, and lowland swamp forest. Cultural connections also exist with local indigenous communities living near or within forest zones. These protected areas have been preserved due to their ecological importance and serve as key conservation sites amid threats from illegal logging and agricultural encroachment. Tourists are typically drawn to the site for its natural beauty, adventure activities, and the chance to learn about tropical rainforest ecology firsthand. Entry is usually coordinated through the visitor centers in the national parks and often involves guided expeditions given the remote and rugged nature of the terrain.
