Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Wli Waterfalls Forest Reserve is located in the Hohoe district of Ghana’s Volta Region, protecting an area of tropical rainforest and supporting one of West Africa’s most iconic natural landmarks — the Wli Waterfalls. The reserve features two main waterfalls, the lower and upper falls, with the upper waterfall being the tallest in Ghana and among the tallest in West Africa at approximately 80 meters high. The forest reserve spans a varied landscape of dense tropical forest, waterfalls, streams, and rugged terrain, supporting a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy several well-maintained hiking trails leading to the waterfalls, which provide opportunities to spot local wildlife such as various bird species, butterflies, and monkeys. The area also holds cultural significance for the indigenous Ewe people, with nearby villages offering cultural insights and local crafts. The reserve’s cool, lush environment and scenic waterfalls make it a popular destination for ecotourism, combining outdoor adventure with natural beauty and local heritage. It is ideal for day hikes, photography, nature observation, and relaxation at the waterfall pools. Wli Waterfalls Forest Reserve is easily accessed from the town of Hohoe and serves as a key conservation site in Ghana to protect both natural resources and cultural landscapes.
