This protected area centers around Hwanseon Cave, one of the largest and most spectacular limestone caves in Asia, known for its vast size and diverse karst formations. The cave stretches roughly 6.2 kilometers in length, with grand halls, dramatic stalactites and stalagmites, underground streams, waterfalls, and unique speleological landscapes carved over thousands of years. The cave's entrance is situated at an elevation of approximately 500 meters and is approached via a scenic hike through dense temperate forests rich in diverse flora and fauna. The area’s ecology supports various wildlife including rare amphibians and unique cave-adapted species, underscoring its conservation value. Historically, Hwanseon Cave was largely unknown to the public until its discovery and exploration in the late 20th century, since when it has become a key attraction within Seoraksan National Park. Visitors are drawn by the cave's natural beauty and geological significance, as well as the surrounding mountain scenery. Recreational opportunities extend beyond the cave itself to include hiking in the surrounding mountains and wildlife observation. The cave is equipped with safe walkways and lighting, making it accessible to a broad range of visitors while preserving the delicate environment inside.
