Galeras Volcano National Natural Park, located in the Nariño Department of southern Colombia, protects the towering Galeras Volcano, an active stratovolcano rising to 4,276 meters (14,035 feet) above sea level. The park encompasses a rugged volcanic landscape featuring lava fields, fumaroles, crater rims, and ash-covered slopes, set within the tropical Andean mountain range. Ecologically, the park supports diverse ecosystems, from montane forests rich in endemic bird species and orchids to páramo high-altitude grasslands. Galeras is notable both for its natural beauty and its volcanic activity, with frequent minor eruptions and fumarolic activity that require ongoing monitoring by volcanologists.
Historically, Galeras has played a significant cultural role for local indigenous communities, and it posed serious hazards to scientists and visitors in the past, notably a fatal 1993 eruption during a scientific expedition. Today, the park serves as an important site for volcanic research, education, and ecotourism. Hiking around the volcano is a popular but carefully managed activity, granting visitors the opportunity to witness volcanic features such as steaming vents and panoramic views of the Andes and nearby city of Pasto. The park also provides habitat for rare wildlife including spectacled bears, Andean condors, and various amphibians adapted to volcanic soils.
