Located on the border between China’s Jilin Province and North Korea, Changbai Mountain National Nature Reserve encompasses the volcanic Changbai Mountain range, which includes the iconic Tianchi (Heaven Lake) crater lake at its summit. The reserve spans diverse ecosystems ranging from mixed forests and broadleaf deciduous trees at lower elevations to alpine tundra near the peak. The mountain is the highest in northeastern China, rising to 2,744 meters (9,003 feet). Changbai Mountain is home to several endangered species such as the Siberian tiger, Amur leopard, and the rare Korean goral, alongside a wealth of flora including Korean pine and rhododendrons. The reserve's volcanic geology shapes dramatic landscapes of lava flows, hot springs, and waterfalls, making it a distinctive natural area for exploration.
