Alto Purús National Park

Alto Purús National Park, established in 2004, is located in the regions of Ucayali and Madre de Dios in southeastern Peru. Covering approximately 2.5 million acres (about 1 million hectares), it is one of the largest protected areas within the western Amazon basin. The park encompasses an extensive portion of the Amazon rainforest, including lowland tropical rainforests, dense riverine forests, and seasonally flooded areas. The Purús River and its tributaries form the main geographic features, providing vital aquatic habitats and serving as natural access routes through the park. The biodiversity of Alto Purús is exceptional, hosting a wealth of species such as jaguars, giant river otters, tapirs, black caimans, and a large variety of birds, amphibians, and fish. Several indigenous communities, including Asháninka, Matsés, and Amahuaca peoples, live within or near the park boundaries, maintaining traditional lifestyles and stewardship of the land. Visitor infrastructure is minimal to preserve the remote and pristine nature of the park, but guided tours offer opportunities for wildlife viewing, river excursions by canoe, and cultural interaction. The park's remote location attracts researchers and adventurous travelers interested in Amazonian ecosystems and indigenous cultures. Key recreational activities include jungle trekking, birdwatching, fishing, and photographic safaris. Alto Purús serves as an important conservation area, protecting critical habitats and acting as a refuge for endangered species while fostering sustainable relationships with local communities.
