About Aukštaitija National Park

Aukštaitija National Park is Lithuania’s oldest national park, renowned for its picturesque lakes, dense forests, and traditional villages, offering rich opportunities for hiking, canoeing, and cultural exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Established in 1974, Aukštaitija National Park is located in northeastern Lithuania and covers a diverse landscape of rolling hills, pristine lakes, forests, and wetlands, forming part of the greater Aukštaitija region known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The park encompasses more than 200 lakes, connected by waterways and surrounded by ancient pine and mixed forests, making it a haven for biodiversity, including species such as the Eurasian otter, white-tailed eagle, and various rare fish. The landscape is characterized by glacial moraine hills and karstic landforms. Besides nature, the park preserves several ethnographic villages featuring traditional wooden architecture, including the town of Palūšė with its iconic 18th-century wooden church. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy over 70 kilometers of marked hiking trails winding through forests and along lakeshores, canoeing and kayaking on interconnected lakes and rivers, cycling, horseback riding, and bird watching. Winter offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The park also serves as an important cultural site with archaeological relics and historical monuments representing Lithuania’s past rural life. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful surroundings, clear waters, and the opportunity to experience Lithuanian nature and tradition in harmony. With organized visitor facilities and information centers, Aukštaitija National Park is a top destination for sustainable outdoor recreation and eco-tourism in the Baltic region.
