About Lagos de Montebello National Park

Lagos de Montebello National Park is renowned for its spectacular series of vibrant, multi-colored lakes nestled among rolling pine and oak forests, offering visitors a unique combination of scenic beauty and outdoor recreation.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Lagos de Montebello National Park is located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, near the Guatemalan border. The park encompasses more than 50 interconnected lakes distinguished by their striking cobalt, turquoise, emerald, and sapphire colors, which result from variations in mineral content and algae. Spanning approximately 6,400 hectares, the park's landscape is characterized by karst formations and gently rolling hills covered by mixed pine and oak forests, providing habitat for a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Historically, the park has cultural significance for the local indigenous groups and was designated a national park in 1959 to protect its unique hydrological and ecological features. Visitors are drawn to Lagos de Montebello for a variety of recreational opportunities including hiking, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, and photography. Numerous trails wind through the forested areas, connecting different lakes and offering panoramic views. The park also contains archeological sites and traditional Mayan communities nearby that lend additional cultural interest.

Notable landmarks within the park include Lake Tziscao—one of the largest and clearest lakes—and Lake Pojoj, known for its intense green hue. Birdwatching is popular due to the presence of species such as kingfishers, herons, and eagles. The park’s peaceful, unspoiled environment offers visitors a serene nature getaway with varying landscapes and tranquility rarely found in other park settings.
