Montagne d’Ambre National Park is located in the northern tip of Madagascar, within the Diana Region near the city of Antsiranana (Diego Suarez). The park covers a volcanic massif rising to about 1,475 meters (4,839 feet), featuring a cooler and wetter climate compared to the surrounding dry lowlands. This elevation supports a lush montane rainforest distinct from Madagascar’s more common spiny forests. The park’s ecosystem is rich with endemic flora and fauna, including several species of lemurs, chameleons, and a wide variety of orchids. Montagne d’Ambre’s dense forest is interspersed with crater lakes and waterfalls, making it a popular destination for trekking and wildlife observation. Trails range from easy walks to more strenuous hikes, often shaded by towering trees and punctuated by scenic views. The park has great significance both ecologically and culturally, preserving rare wildlife and plant species and offering insight into Malagasy volcanic landscapes. Visitors can explore the natural waterfalls and endemic birds, and enjoy relatively cool temperatures compared to the coastal regions.
