Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês is the only national park in Portugal, situated in the northern region of the country along the border with Spain. Spanning over 190,000 acres, the park features a diverse array of terrain, including dramatic mountains, lush valleys, and pristine rivers. It boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna, with wolves, golden eagles, and the unique Gerês wild pony among its many species. Historically, the area is dotted with ancient Roman roads, traditional granite villages, and sacred sites, such as the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta. Recreational opportunities abound, from hiking and bird watching to exploring the remote, picturesque landscapes.
