Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Situated in the southern central part of Leyte Island in the Philippines, the Agas-agas Protected Landscape and Seascape encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems including montane forests, river valleys, and coastal seascapes along the Pacific Ocean. The protected area is centered around the Agas-agas mountain range and is renowned for its steep slopes, mist-covered forests, and the dynamic Agas-agas River that carves through the terrain, providing critical watershed functions. Established to safeguard the area's rich biodiversity and crucial water sources, Agas-agas supports various endemic and threatened species of flora and fauna, including numerous bird species and native mammals. The area also reflects the cultural heritage of indigenous communities living within and around its perimeter, who have traditions closely tied to the landscape.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Agas-agas offers a variety of recreation opportunities such as trekking through pristine forests, birdwatching, river trekking, and riding the popular Agas-agas Zipline—one of the highest and longest in the Philippines—which crosses deep valleys affording spectacular panoramic views. Adventure seekers also enjoy mountain biking and exploring waterfalls hidden in the forest. The site is accessible from nearby towns such as Sogod and Karay-a, serving as gateways to the protected area. With its blend of robust natural environment, thrilling activities, and cultural significance, Agas-agas Protected Landscape and Seascape stands out as both a conservation site and an emerging eco-tourism destination.
