About Alerces National Park

Alerces National Park is a pristine wilderness in Patagonia renowned for its ancient alerce trees, dramatic lakes, and rugged mountainous landscapes, offering a unique outdoor experience for nature lovers and adventurers.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located in the northwest of Argentina's Chubut Province, Alerces National Park protects one of the world's largest and oldest forests of alerce trees (Fitzroya cupressoides), which can live for over 3,000 years. The park, spanning over 260,000 acres, is part of the Andes mountain range and features spectacular glacial lakes such as Lake Menéndez and Lake Futalaufquen. Its varied topography includes temperate rainforest, steep valleys, and snow-capped peaks, providing diverse habitats for a rich array of flora and fauna. The park is home to native mammals like the pudú (the world’s smallest deer), guanacos, and Andean condors soaring the skies. Established in 1947, the park preserves vital ecosystems and cultural heritage of the Mapuche people. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, including hiking multi-day trails with breathtaking views, kayaking on turquoise lakes, fishing for brown trout, and wildlife photography. Iconic trails lead visitors to dramatic waterfalls like the Chorriaca waterfalls and remote scenic viewpoints. The park's remote location and minimal infrastructure appeal to visitors seeking solitude and immersion in a largely untouched wilderness. With its cool, wet climate and protected status, Alerces National Park remains a vital refuge for biodiversity and a bucket-list destination for Patagonian explorers.
