Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Área de Proteção Ambiental das Baleias is an extensive coastal Environmental Protection Area (APA) located along the southern coast of Santa Catarina state in Brazil. Established to safeguard the breeding and migratory corridors of large marine mammals, especially the Southern Right Whale and Humpback Whale, this protected area encompasses numerous coastal habitats including sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, estuaries, and marine waters. The region benefits from a rich biodiversity, featuring endangered sea turtles, seabirds, and various fish species, while supporting artisanal fishing communities practicing sustainable livelihoods.
Historically, the area's importance was recognized due to its role as a critical breeding ground for whales that migrate from Antarctic waters to warm tropical beaches for reproduction. The APA designation helps enforce regulations to limit commercial development, pollution, and unsustainable fishing practices, preserving both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
Outdoor recreation revolves primarily around responsible wildlife viewing, with whale watching season drawing visitors from June to November when southern right whales come close to shore. Ecotourism activities also include guided beach walks, birdwatching, and small boat tours. In addition to marine life, hiking opportunities exist across coastal trails showcasing scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean, sand dunes, and native Atlantic Forest fragments. The APA’s beautiful landscapes and rich cultural heritage make it a rewarding destination for nature lovers, researchers, and those seeking tranquil natural environments off Brazil’s more developed tourist routes.
