Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Awash National Park, located in the northern part of Ethiopia within the Afar Region, is renowned for its diverse ecosystems that include semi-arid savannas, rugged volcanic landscapes, and riverine meadows. Established in 1966, the park covers approximately 756 square kilometers, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, such as the Beisa oryx, Soemmering's gazelle, and greater and lesser kudus. Birdwatching enthusiasts flock here to spot over 450 species, including the rare yellow-throated seedeater. The Awash River, which courses through the park, creates spectacular waterfalls and lush vegetation along its banks. The park's history is rich with evidence of human settlement and activity dating back several millennia, highlighted by archaeological sites that offer glimpses into ancient cultures. Recreational activities include guided safari tours, bush camping, hiking, and exploring the unique geological formations and hot springs.
