Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Bear Creek Lake Park encompasses approximately 2,624 acres of forested land, wetlands, and open spaces located southwest of Denver, Colorado, near Morrison and Lakewood. The park centers on a 110-acre reservoir created by Bear Creek Dam, providing opportunities for fishing, boating, and paddle sports. The surrounding terrain offers mixed woodlands dominated by ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, and scrub oak, supporting wildlife such as mule deer, red fox, and numerous bird species including bald eagles and great horned owls. Established in 1977, the park is managed by Jefferson County Open Space, aiming to conserve the area's natural environment while providing diverse recreational options. Visitors can enjoy over 11 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, including sections connected to the larger Bear Creek Regional Trail system. The park also features designated picnic areas, playgrounds, seasonal fishing zones, and a designated dog off-leash area. Winter sport enthusiasts can explore snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Notable features include the scenic reservoir with boat ramps, scenic overlooks atop ridges with views of the foothills, and an interpretive nature center offering environmental education programs. Bear Creek Lake Park attracts a broad range of visitors, from families looking for a day outdoors to active trail users and anglers seeking accessible natural surroundings near the Denver metro area.
