About Bellingrath Gardens and Home

Bellingrath Gardens and Home offers visitors a blend of stunning botanical gardens and historic architecture alongside scenic views of the Fowl River in Alabama's Gulf Coast region.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Bellingrath Gardens and Home is a 65-acre public garden and historic estate located on the banks of the Fowl River near Mobile, Alabama. This area features a rich variety of horticultural displays including azaleas, camellias, roses, and hundreds of seasonal blooms that transform with the year. The garden was created in 1932 by Walter and Bessie Bellingrath, who developed the landscape around their 12-room Spanish Colonial Revival-style home. Visitors can explore formal gardens, woodland trails, and a reflecting pool alongside the original home, which is preserved with period furnishings and offers a glimpse into early 20th-century Southern life. The garden environment supports local wildlife such as songbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a vibrant ecological space. Seasonal events, holiday light displays, and special tours enhance the visitor experience. The gardens provide a serene outdoor setting ideal for photography, leisurely walks, and educational opportunities about plant varieties and gardening techniques. Its proximity to Mobile and location along the Gulf Coast contribute to its appeal as a unique destination combining cultural heritage with natural beauty.
